Sleep is one of our most important daily routines, it can have an affect the mood you’re in and how productive you are during the day and you're overall health. Staying up at late at night will stop you from being the best you can be and below I have listed 6 reasons why:
1. Chronic sleep deprivation
Did you know that “night owls” are much more prone to chronic sleep deprivation? This basically means they don't get the required amount of sleep their body needs and it is usually because they don’t tend to monitor the amount of sleep that they will get. If you don’t yet monitor your sleep then I really recommend that you start today. It’s very easy to do this as there are many apps/programs that will help you and some can automatically detect how long you are actually sleeping. It's important because need to know how much sleep you need so you can plan your day around it and not the other way round. I'm sure you've experienced having little or no sleep and trying to get through the day and it's next to impossible!
2. Lower overall grades
A recent study showed that university students that claimed they were night owls are much more likely to have lower grades. Some of the other symptoms that were shown were memory loss and short attention spans which is never a good thing when it comes to revising. Obviously not all night owls had lower grades but the trend shows that the majority of them did.
3. Generally more negative
And understandably so! I'd be just as bad if I didn't get enough sleep. This also makes them more prone to alcohol and/or nicotine addiction. Not only this but these factors also contribute to the number of night owls that have depression, which is significantly greater than early birds.
4. General working/ school day
Most people have a 9-5 job or if you’re in school the hours you work will be similar and if we want to be prepared for school or work then realistically we should be waking up much earlier. Neuroscientists claimed that if you go to sleep at midnight your brain will not be fully awake until around 10 am, so you will feel more tired and be more unproductive. Also the if you go to sleep late the chances are that you'll be waking up late too and this means that you might be pushing things back which you could get over and done with in the morning to much later on where you're more likely to forget about them.
5. Weakens the immune system
Lack of sleep and late sleeping could be the reason you feel ill so often as it messes with your immune system (and that’s just a recipe for disaster). Over 15 years of neuroimmunology has shown that sleep boosts the immune system and people with a lack of sleep are more likely to fall ill. So make sure you’re getting enough sleep to keep yourself healthy.
6. It's harder to sleep late
Almost anyone who has studied biology can tell you that pretty much all living things have circadian rhythms and this just a cycle that your body goes through everyday which correlates with daylight hours. Now if you're awake when your body is trying to sleep you're going to mess up the sleeping pattern that nature intended for you. By staying awake late you're causing your body to struggle more than it needs to.
