4 Steps to improve your adaptability

In this ever-changing world it’s difficult to keep up with everything that is going on in our lives. Our situation changes, technology changes and sometimes we must change too but how do we make it easier adapt to these changes? How can we prepare ourselves to change even when we don’t necessarily want to?

1. Become aware of your situation

Understand what your actual situation is. It’s easy to let your past experiences to decide what your situation is but it’s very important that you learn to take a step back and think about what is the situation that you’ve been placed in without any bias. Take time to understand what your perspective is and the reasoning of why you think what you do. For example, if you’ve had a bad experience with public speaking then when you must speak, you’ll automatically perceive it as something negative. However, if you look at the bigger picture, you’ll notice that public speaking isn’t that bad after all and the worst outcome is people don’t like your talk. So, as difficult as it is, don’t let your perspective of your situation be skewed by anything.

2. Take on the right mindset

It can often be hard to accept when you get put into a new situation, especially when you didn’t have a choice but my best advice for that is change your mindset. We can’t always change what’s going on externally but what we can do is change the way we see them. Instead of complaining or feeling sorry for yourself, focus your energy on doing something which is actually productive or will help your situation. No matter how bad your situation is complaining and feeling sorry for yourself will not help anyone. Try to see everything as a new opportunity, there’s always a positive if you look hard enough. Additionally, one thing which I feel like stops people being able to adapt is their own expectations. People tend to set a standard for them and their life and as soon as that changes, they tend to get super uncomfortable. Life doesn’t care what you want, so if one day you wake up and everything changes it’s your responsibility to change with it. Don’t get caught up in what used to be, make sure you’re ready to move forward.

3. Build your skills and knowledge

When you’re entering a new chapter or page of your life it’s important that you become familiar of with your environment and learn what is required from you. Learning what is required from you is the knowledge part and the skills is working on what you need to do. The is something that you’ve probably gotten used to as it’s something that you’re taught since you start school. A lot of different things in life require different skills for you to get good and feel comfortable with what you’re doing. It’s not always easy to build the skills and knowledge but it is really important that you keep trying and when you’re in a new situation with no way out you force yourself to grow.

4. Be confident in your decisions

Often when things changed, we’re faced with a lot of uncertainty, should we change what we do? Who we are? The people around us? The decisions that we’re faced with will no doubt change almost everything that happens in our lives and it’s up to us to make the right choice, no pressure, right? The truth is when you’re put into a situation and you don’t know how to react what you do isn’t actually that important. I mean your decision could be the difference between you becoming a millionaire and you being put out on the street, but the truth is you’ll never know which one will get you to either place. We can only learn from experience, not the things which haven’t happened. When you’re faced with a new situation don’t be afraid to fail. The likelihood is you will probably fail but it’s vital that you remember that failure is part of life and you can move on from.
